System architectures traditionally followed monolithic patterns but more recently have advanced to patterns that distribute applications in smaller pieces, ie. microservices. These enable teams to build, test and deploy changes at higher velocities especially when using continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD). These loosely coupled systems have more autonomy and fewer dependencies making them more stable and yet they are inherently more complex so require additional management and maintenance techniques and tools.
