Get Your DevOps Adoption Right with an Organization Assessment

In the current situation, businesses have understood that “IT is Business”. Carlota Perez mentions that we are in the middle of the fifth Technology Revolution and this is a time of “Great Perils and Great Opportunities.” This means that we will be seeing more change in technology to come, as well as changes in human lifestyles leading to a change in the needs of the customers. 

The Need to Assess Current vs. Target State in Your DevOps Adoption

This will require organizations to be able to adapt to change and deliver faster with adopting DevOps as a minimum requirement. Gartner predicts that through 2022, 75% of DevOps initiatives will fail to meet expectations. This is because people are not doing it right. To be able to turn this around, organizations need to start pivoting and doing DevOps right.

As we know, while using GPS, we need two inputs to map the route:

  1. The Destination. In our case, the vision or the Objective.
  2. The Current Location or the place from where to start. In our case, it is the understanding of the current state.

If we do not know our current state, we will not be able to find out what should be improved to reach our target state.

Assessing Where You Are in Your DevOps Journey with the Assessment of DevOps Capabilities (ADOC)

DevOps Institute has launched the Assessment of DevOps Capabilities – ADOC, which is a comprehensive, crowdsourced assessment based on the Likert scale and heat maps.  This Assessment will give participants visibility into their current DevOps state. 

ADOC is available in two versions: Team ADOC and Enterprise ADOC.

ADOC helps us to have a clear understanding of the current state. This current state assessment is based on five key DevOps dimensions:

  1. Human Aspects: This feature focuses on culture, psychological safety, dynamic learning, transformational leadership, The Three Ways, diversity, and inclusion.
  2. Process and Frameworks: This dimension focuses on agile, lean, ITSM, GRC, VSM, Project to Product, SRE, DevSecOps, Design and Systems Thinking, Holacracy and Humanocracy.
  3. Functional Composition: This feature focuses on collaboration, portfolio and product management, change, architecture, build, test, release, operate and support.
  4. Intelligent Automation: This feature focuses on artifact and source control, CICD, environment management, continuous compliance, observability, AIOps and Value Stream Management.
  5. Technology Ecosystems: This focuses on elastic infrastructure, containers, microservices, APIs, serverless, DevOps toolchains, open and inner-source, and secrets management.

Based on this assessment, we then strategize the improvement path. The DevOps Third Way talks about Continuous Improvement, experimentation, and learning. We use the understanding of the assessment to chalk out the areas of improvement in each value stream and then decide which one gives the best return to achieve our goal and maximize value creation.

Vital Challenges of the DevOps Capability Assessment in Moving to DevOps

  • Data – Without assessing your current situation, it is not possible to assess the improvement towards any future state. Therefore, you must be data-driven from the inception.
  • Constrictions – The challenge is that the leaders must comprehend and prioritize constrictions. The constraints arise often ‘in flight’. These unanticipated events can hinder progress.
  • Synchronicity – Where silos are present in any organization, the end-to-end system vision is missing. Without any strategy which synchronizes the change for Process, Culture, Technology, and People, the advancement will be disorganized and slower than required.
